Abstract

“The Predicament of the Ethics of AI”

There is a difficult predicament for those working on the ethics of AI, and it follows from two conditions. First, AI will be transformational in its effects on science, engineering, and human culture. Second, ethical problems stemming from AI are not likely to yield to the “common approaches” of applied ethics. I will describe some of the challenges for the ethics of Artificial Intelligence (AI) that are explored in depth in Powers & Ganascia (forthcoming)*. These challenges concern conceptual ambiguities surrounding agency, autonomy, and intelligence, the over-and under-estimation of AI risks, and some hard problems in modeling and implementing an AI ethics.
